A COOL WELCOME
Logan was so exhausted he thought he would be able to sleep anywhere, but by the time morning finally came he had barely shut his eyes. They had come all this way to find a way to defeat the red dragons only to find they were no closer to a solution.
He was more than a little surprised to see the sun streaming in a window when he went into the main living area. Myles, Erik and Djana were already eating at the table and beckoned him over. There was no sign of Zared, Jarret or Alyxa.
âI guess they were more than ready for the goods we brought to trade,â Logan commented, looking at the dried and uninviting foods laid out on the table for breakfast. âIt must be hard to grow food when you live under a rock, but itâs a lot brighter than I thought it would be.â
âWe do manage to grow some food, and the trees in the forest have fruit on them, itâs a matter of getting to it before the dragons.â Rhia explained, bustling in with more food, closely followed by Shayan. Since last nightâs revelation that he was her long-lost son Rhia had been hovering over him almost constantly. âThe sun is low to the north in the winter and our village opens out to face the north. It shines in here most of the day during winter. In the summer we are in the shade all day, which is good as it gets very hot here in summer.â
âThis is winter?â Alyxa came into the room, rubbing her eyes. She looked to have had as little sleep as Logan. The air was warm and not a breath of wind reached into the village. Logan could well imagine how hot it would get in summer.
âWas the village built here to protect you from the dragons?â Djana asked through a mouthful of bread.
âNo, they built the village a long time ago, long before the red and golden dragons came to the surface,â Rhia replied. âIt was built here to house the men and women who worked the silver mines. It was the easiest place to build accommodation that would keep out of the heat.â
Just then Zared and Jarret came in the door. Jarret looked worried.
âIt is time for the council meeting. The presence of three dragons is more than some of the villagers can cope with and they want them to leave,â Jarret told them all.
âAlready?â Logan said, trying to peer out the window to see if he could see the sun.
âYou have all slept well. It was a long hard day yesterday,â Rhia said kindly. âWe did not wish to wake you.â
âI will take Zared and tell them what happened at Radolk Falls.â Jarret continued. âThey will surely listen and agree that it is time to do something about The Rift.â
âBut we need to come,â Myles argued. âZared doesnât remember anything. He canât explain what happened.â
âIâm sorry,â Jarret replied with a shake of his head.
